FHSAA says it has plan for bad weather
by admin
So, what happens if bad weather knocks out any of the regional finals baseball games scheduled for Friday and Saturday?
Good question. And one the FHSAA is unwilling to answer.
I made one phone call and sent two e-mails asking about the possibility of makeup games happening Sunday (when high school games aren’t played in Florida) and got back this beauty … “we have a contingency plan in place, but it’s a case-by-case basis.”
OK, I begin thinking maybe I didn’t fully explain the question. So, I wrote back in more detail, saying I want to help readers know what to expect if a game (or two or three) has to be moved to a different date. For work-related reasons, I also wanted to know in case we needed our writers on call for Sunday. I also added getting the information out will help the FHSAA avoid tons of weekend phone calls from curious fans and will ensure the gates are good at rescheduled games.
The reply: “we have a contingency plan in place, but it’s a case-by-case basis.”
Apparently, the “contingency plan” is top secret, locked away in a box in a vault in a bank that has been re-enforced by steel walls. And the key to get in was swallowed by a gigantic man-eating reptile.
When I spoke to him Wednesday, Gainesville High School baseball coach Adam Souilliard had no idea what would happen if his team’s Friday doubleheader in Niceville ” five hours away Niceville ” was washed out.
He suggested they could play up to three games on Saturday, but added that was just a guess.
And if Saturday was rained out?
(Shrug)
Someone should make sure he does know. After all, the winner of that series will have to play again Wednesday in the Class 5A state semifinals at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.
The other local regional finalists (Buchholz, Keystone Heights and Palatka) wouldn’t have as quick a turnaround, as the earliest one of them would play again is next Friday, but no doubt they’d like to have some idea how to plan ahead in the event of weather postponements.
Hopefully, the weekend will be sunny and this won’t be an issue.
However, if weather problems do arise, the big secret will have to be unlocked. Let’s just hope the coaches, players and umpires are notified ahead of time.
It looks like the rest of us won’t be.
