What a rush

by admin

Last Friday was to be a mere appetizer because this was supposed to be the week of memorable local high school football games.

Turns out, last week’s games gave us a lot to remember.

Four area running backs ” Fort White’s Xavier Blake, P.K. Yonge’s Dre Maddox, Columbia’ss Tiger Powell and Newberry’s Antwan Ivey ” all rushed for at least 248 yards. Eastside quarterback Desmond O’Neal completed 13-of-16 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns in a victory at Palatka. And Buchholz, suddenly winners of two straight, shut out a Crawfordville Wakulla team that entered the contest undefeated and averaging 24.8 points-a-game.

Can this week top that?

It certainly looks possible.

Buchholz and Gainesville will face off at Citizens Field. Columbia welcomes Ponte Vedra Beach Nease to Lake City with the winner expected to eventually be the District 5-4A champion. Eastside hosts Belleview on Thursday in a game that should help determine the 6-4A champ. And Union County hosts P.K. Yonge with the winner remaining in the playoff hunt.

No doubt there will be a lot to talk about next week.
