Unfortunately, the “GameDay” high school boys basketball television series we did last year won’t be returning this season.
Show creator Edward Lavagnino worked tirelessly to find sponsors, but having enough funding to produce a sports show in this town that doesn’t have the word “Gators” in it is a difficult proposition.

This Friday night Newberry High School will host its biggest game so far this century when District 4-2B power Ocala Trinity Catholic comes to town.
On Oct. 14, 2005 when the Panthers squared off with the eventual FHSAA state champion Celtics, it was like a Super Bowl-winning celebration when Newberry scored the first points Trinity Catholic had allowed all season (a stretch spanning the previous seven games).

That in itself would be shocking enough for Gainesville, which has …

Due to the sizes of many small schools, it’s difficult to produce a great football program, year in and year out. After all, one or two indifferent (or unathletic) senior classes can turn a 10-2 team one season into a 1-9 rebuilding effort the next.
So, it’s been fun to follow Newberry’s progression the last few years.
Two seasons ago, we got a glimpse of what might come when the young Panthers finished 2-8, but were …
