End of our “GameDay” show

by admin

Unfortunately, the “GameDay” high school boys basketball television series we did last year won’t be returning this season. Show creator Edward Lavagnino worked tirelessly to find sponsors, but having enough funding to produce a sports show in this town that doesn’t have the word “Gators” in it is a difficult proposition. Special thanks to Lavagnino, the wonderful crew, guests and sponsors we had in our short run. Also, thanks to my very talented fellow cast members Jeff Cardozo, … Read More »

Newberry the favorite vs. Trinity Catholic?

by admin

This Friday night Newberry High School will host its biggest game so far this century when District 4-2B power Ocala Trinity Catholic comes to town. On Oct. 14, 2005 when the Panthers squared off with the eventual FHSAA state champion Celtics, it was like a Super Bowl-winning celebration when Newberry scored the first points Trinity Catholic had allowed all season (a stretch spanning the previous seven games). What a rush

by admin

Last Friday was to be a mere appetizer because this was supposed to be the week of memorable local high school football games. Turns out, last week’s games gave us a lot to remember. Eastside quarterback Desmond O’Neal completed 13-of-16 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns … Read More »

Big match for GHS volleyball

by admin

While Tuesday’s 7 p.m. match at Ocala Forest can’t necessarily be called “must win” for the Gainesville High School volleyball team, it’s about as close as you can find. The Hurricanes enter the contest 9-1 in District 4-5A, while the Wildcats are 10-0, having topped GHS in four hard-fought games last Thursday at the Purple Palace. A win by Forest on Tuesday would clinch the regular season district title. That in itself would be shocking enough for Gainesville, which has … Read More »

Newberry making noise

by admin

Due to the sizes of many small schools, it’s difficult to produce a great football program, year in and year out. After all, one or two indifferent (or unathletic) senior classes can turn a 10-2 team one season into a 1-9 rebuilding effort the next. So, it’s been fun to follow Newberry’s progression the last few years. Two seasons ago, we got a glimpse of what might come when the young Panthers finished 2-8, but were … Read More »
