Steroids testing ends with a whimper

by admin

One year later, the big initiative has ended quietly with very little to show for it. The Florida Senate will not renew House Bill 461, which called for steroid testing of high school athletes. The reason given was the program was set up as a one-year experiment (costing $100,000) and now funding isn’t available because of financial cuts. My question is, was this anything more than just a publicity stunt from the start? Seriously, … Read More »

FHSAA narrows director search

by admin

The FHSAA has narrowed its choices for its next executive director to three. James “Roger” Dearing, Clifton V. Norris and William “Sam” Ward are the finalists. Dearing has been the superintendent of schools in Manatee County since 2003 after serving as the Indian River County superintendent for nine years. Norris has been the Levy County superintendent since 2000, and prior to that, he was the Levy County assistant superintendent for seven years. Norris also was … Read More »

Scott may be Dixie County’s best

by admin

Dixie County High School, in the heart of tiny Cross City, has had more highly productive running backs than any other local school since the turn of the century. Names like Nick Collins (now a Green Bay Packers’ safety), Jeremy Carter and Paul O’hara have all been among the state’s top rushers their junior and senior seasons. And Rodney Scott may just be the best of the bunch. The new Auburn commitment led the state … Read More »

Remembering Dante Anderson

by admin

One year has passed, and I still think about Dante Anderson often. The former Eastside basketball standout who, along with friend Curtis Hampton, died in a car wreck May 19, 2007 should have spent his senior year figuring out which of the many interested colleges he would be playing for, getting his grades and test scores in order and trying to lead the Rams to their second FHSAA Class 5A state championship in three seasons. Unfortunately, … Read More »

Have a great day, Mom

by admin

When I was a little kid, she would create specialized invitations for birthday parties she threw for me at a cozy little funspot called Germania Springs. Those gatherings were a hit every April with my elementary school buddies. When I was a teenager, there she was at all of my games, videocamera in hand. And she cheered loudest for me, no matter if it was football, basketball or baseball season. It made no difference that my … Read More »

FHSAA says it has plan for bad weather

by admin

So, what happens if bad weather knocks out any of the regional finals baseball games scheduled for Friday and Saturday? Good question. And one the FHSAA is unwilling to answer. I made one phone call and sent two e-mails asking about the possibility of makeup games happening Sunday (when high school games aren’t played in Florida) and got back this beauty … “we have a contingency plan in place, but it’s a case-by-case basis.” OK, I begin thinking maybe I … Read More »

GHS catcher a special kind of throwback

by admin

We often hear of players being referred to as “throwbacks.” Well, I have a new term for athletes like Gainesville High School catcher Jack Miller. “Wayback throwback.” The Hurricanes will be travelling to Niceville this weekend for the FHSAA Class 5A, Region 1 finals. Two games are guaranteed for Friday (at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. CST) and another could take place Saturday at 1 p.m., provided the two teams split the Day One doubleheader. Miller says he will … Read More »
