Important FHSAA meeting

by admin

One of the most newsworthy FHSAA board of directors meetings is scheduled for April 26. There, among the many topics that will be discussed is the planned reduction of all varsity schedules (football excluded) by 20-percent beginning next year. The FHSAA has taken a lot of heat for this from athletic departments statewide, but in fairness, it needs to be noted the reduction idea was pushed to the FHSAA by superintendents (though not all of them) as a way to help schools get through … Read More »

Can’t Miss Tyler Holt

by admin

Quite simply, Tyler Holt was the most disruptive high school baseball player I have seen in the last decade. That in no way is a criticism. In fact it is a huge compliment. When he would get on base while at Gainesville High School (something that happened often), Holt knew how to negatively affect a pitcher. While not as fast as other local standouts like former P.K. Yonge outfielder Derrick Robinson and current Buchholz speedster Levon Washington (and in fairness, those … Read More »

More on Ash’lea

by admin

The first time I heard anything about Ash’lea Moore possibly being let go as the P.K. Yonge girls basketball coach came on the night of Feb. 17. I was driving back from covering the Bartram Trail-Eastside regional semifinal and was on the phone with someone not involved with the Blue Wave, but someone I would consider “in the know.” He/she told me there were internal issues inside the PKY program and that the probability existed Moore would be fired at the end of the season, even if the … Read More »

Elam still Gainesville bound

by admin

He was one of Florida’s first football commitments for the Class of 2010, and on Wednesday at the FHSAA boys basketball final four in Lakeland, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer athlete Matt Elam said he has every intention of honoring his pledge. “There won’t be any change of mind,” Elam said. “I’ll be in Gainesville in January.” The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety/running back/receiver said he hopes to play defense for UF. He listed the Gators’ tradition, UF’s fervent fan base … Read More »

All-American Bonds?

by admin

There is the start of a push in the Gainesville area for P.K. Yonge Class of 2010 guard Jaterra Bonds to be a McDonald’s All-American next year. Count a current All-American, who also has been an Elite Essence teammate of the Gator commitment for two summers, among those who thinks that should be the case. “Of course she should be,” said Miramar Parkway senior guard Erica Wheeler, a Rutgers signee. “She’s a humble kid, a great kid. She called me (the night before the … Read More »

Little’s Bucs will take on Gators

by admin

Eastside football coach Kent Johnson said on Jan. 30 that his senior running back John Little was going back and forth on whether to sign a national letter of intent with Charleston Southern or Grambling State. After considering everything, ultimately Little decided to slide on the Charleston Southern cap on National Signing Day (Feb. 4). And that came with a perk. The Buccaneers will be opening their season Sept. 5 in Gainesville against the defending national champion Gators. “I’m really excited about … Read More »

Powell has offer from UF

by admin

His big day isn’t for another year, but Columbia junior Tiger Powell already has started thinking a little about 2010’s National Signing Day. The 6-foot, 205-pound tailback already has scholarship offers from South Florida, Central Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Florida. Because it’s so early in the recruiting process, Powell said he’s really only made one decision. “It doesn’t matter (if I stay in-state), but I’ve got to stay in the southern area,” Powell said. Powell added USF is his early … Read More »

Ranking the state’s top 50 football prospects

by admin

One of the questions I get asked most about my job is how I come up with the state’s top 50 football prospect list. I will admit it is an inexact science, one that requires not just watching players live, but also on video. It’s also smart to talk with as many coaches and analysts as possible and study lists on reputable Web sites like Rivals and Scout. And again, some will project players wrong, some right. Lists are rife … Read More »

Donovan’s new recruiting experience

by admin

Gator basketball coach Billy Donovan has a well-earned reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters. Soon, he’ll have the chance to see things from the other side of the couch. Donovan’s son, also named Billy, is a sharpshooting junior guard for St. Francis. And no doubt, he is going to be the focus of a few college coaches in the next year. When asked about the different role he’ll play in that recruiting – similar to the one Urban Meyer … Read More »

Honoring a hoops mainstay

by admin

Basketball season just isn’t the same without Vince Murray. The Ocala Star-Banner’s fountain of prep hoops’ information for more than 25 years, Murray passed away last March at age 56 after battling an illness. But in no way has Vince been forgotten. The annual Kingdom of the Sun tournament is going on right now, and on Dec. 30 at the event’s conclusion, Vince’s widow, Jimi Sue, will present the most valuable player trophy, which is now permanently … Read More »
